How to Access Databases from Off-Campus: How it Works

This guide will show you how to access databases and other library resources when you are not on campus.

Valid NSU Student I.D.

You must be enrolled for the semester with a current NSU student ID card.  In order to access databases and other electronic resources from off campus., you will need to log in  using your NSU network ID and password.  You will need to use one of the login screens to authenticate yourself.  Please see next tab, sample login screen.

Why Do I Need to Login to Access the Library's Resources Off-Campus?

Electronic resources are only available to current students, faculty and staff due to license agreements and  subscription fees.  The Library uses a proxy server to identify authorized off-campus users.

How Does Off-Campus Access Work?

1.  When you click an electronic resource on the library's website or library's catalog, the proxy will take you to a login page.  (If you are on campus, you will not be asked to log in.)

2. Enter your NSU network ID and password. (The same one you use to access your email and  Blackboard)

3. Once you have logged in, you will not be asked again for your ID and password, until your turn off your computer, or close your browser.

Why is a Proxy Server Needed?

Most of the databases and e-journals provided by the Library are on the web but are not free.   The Library purchases access to them from companies.  The agreement with these companies limit access to current NSU students, faculty and staff.
